"Women With Heart" to Celebrate Two Cherokee County Women

TYLER, TX - In recognition of February as National Heart Month, Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital at Trinity Mother Frances and KYTX CBS 19 are preparing to celebrate two remarkable Cherokee County women who have battled and conquered, cardiac disease with the help of Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital and exude a spirit that has inspired others.

Throughout the month of November, TMFHC and KYTX CBS 19 received nominations and called for community votes during December. The two women voted to represent Cherokee County are Judy Calvert and Shannon Wilks. Please read a short story about their triumphs over heart disease below.

According to statistics from the American Heart Association, heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases cause approximately half of all deaths in American women and one out of three women over age 65 has some form of heart disease. No longer is it considered a disease suffered only by men. We hope you will help us spread the word about our ‘Women With Heart’ event to those in your community.

Ms. Calvert and Ms. Wilks will be honored during a special evening of food, fellowship, and learning Tuesday, February 11, 5:30 p.m. at the Norman Activity Center. The dinner is free and open to the public. It will educate attendees about the risks for heart disease, and feature a fashion show, door prizes, and informational booths. Seating is limited; please call (903) 531-5678 to reserve your spot today.

Cherokee County ‘Women With Heart’

Judy Calvert attended a life-changing Rotary meeting with special guest speaker Deb Taylor, Chief Nursing Officer, LPOHH. She was concerned with high cholesterol and was referred to Dr. Pitonak for guidance, health screening and prevention.  Her calcium scoring results were high and a stress test was ordered. She was diagnosed with triple vessel disease and had bypass surgery. She is now doing cardiac rehab and has no heart damage due to her actions and proactive screenings.

Shannon Wilks is a single working mother to two children, a daughter in college and her 11-year old son, so she doesn't have any spare time to be sick.  She has survived 3 heart attacks in the past few years and calls Trinity Clinic Cardiologist Dr. Oscar Paniagua "her angel."  Dr. Paniagua placed three stents in her heart where blockage had occurred.  She has such a positive outlook and says that it's her children that keep her going, without a doubt.  She knows that it's in God's plan for her to still be here to fulfill a purpose and she makes a huge effort now to de-stress as much as possible and just enjoy every day!
