CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System First in Area to Offer Groundbreaking Surgical Technology

 

TYLER, TX – CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System is the first health care organization in the Tyler area to perform minimally invasive surgery using the groundbreaking robotic da Vinci Xi Surgical System.

 

“Christus Trinity Mother Frances has been providing the latest in minimally invasive surgeries for years but now we can also offer patients the most advanced surgical technology in the market.  With the daVinci Xi, patients having robotic surgery will experience less scarring and pain, fewer complications and faster recoveries,” said Lynn Wyllie, MSN, BSN, RN, CNOR, Administrative Director of Perioperative Services at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “Combined with the previous da Vinci robotic system that is already in place, this new system can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive procedures and complex surgeries. It will expand access to patients who require these treatments and allow us to better serve the people of Northeast Texas with truly unrivaled technology.”

 

For more than a decade, da Vinci Surgical Systems have provided patients with a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery that reduces many of the costs and complications associated with open procedures. The new da Vinci Xi System was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery for complex diseases and conditions in gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac, and general surgery.

"The da Vinci Xi System's new overhead architecture means that multi-quadrant surgery can be performed without repositioning the system, an innovation long sought by surgeons who perform complex procedures. By enabling efficient access throughout the abdomen and chest, the da Vinci Xi System expands upon core da Vinci System features, including wristed instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive motion, and an ergonomic design,” said Charles Beall, M.D. “As with our current da Vinci Surgical System, the da Vinci Xi System's immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient. It’s a wonderful tool to help us treat patients and demonstrates a commitment to excellence in advancing colon, thoracic and pancreatic surgeries, as well as supporting the obstetric, hernia and other surgeries we have been performing for some time. The da Vinci Xi System's key features include:

  • A new overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position.
  • A new endoscope digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact design with improved visual definition and clarity.
  • An ability to attach the endoscope to any arm, providing flexibility for visualizing the surgical site.
  • Smaller, thinner arms with newly designed joints that offer a greater range of motion than ever before.
  • Longer instrument shafts designed to give surgeons greater operative reach.

The da Vinci Surgical System is a surgical platform designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. The system in use at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler consists of an ergonomic surgeon console, a patient-side cart with three or four interactive arms, a high-performance vision system and proprietary EndoWrist® instruments. Powered by state-of-the-art technology, the da Vinci Surgical System is designed to scale, filter and seamlessly translate the surgeon's hand movements into more precise movements of the EndoWrist instruments.
