CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances First to Offer Leading Edge Brain Surgery Technology

TYLER, TX – CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler is the first facility in Northeast Texas to use the Abbott Infinity™ Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) System, an advanced treatment option recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients with Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor.

The first procedure was performed recently by Jerome Lisk M.D., FAAN, Director of the Movement Disorder Clinic, and, Chief of Neurosurgery for CHRISTUS Health in Northeast Texas, Todd Patrick, M.D., Ph.D., FAANS both of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Neuroscience Institute.

“This technology is remarkable because this device and its availability really represents the first major update in the field of DBS in almost 20 years,” said Dr. Lisk. “The technology has been almost stagnant, and now we can offer customized therapy for every person that simply was not available before. It’s a groundbreaking step forward for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease or Essential Tremor, and it’s here available for the first time in this region.”

Abbott’s directional DBS system is the first in the U.S. and first in this region to feature a directional lead with constant current designed to precisely customize therapy to help maximize patient outcomes and reduce side effects. The lead offers eight independent electrode segments through which the physician can steer constant electrical current toward targeted structures of the brain that control movement.

“Precise targeting is critical for patients.” said Dr. Lisk. “The customizable precision of this system allows us to make a very direct impact with this procedure. Eight independent electrode segments are distributed through one directional lead, enabling us to steer current toward targeted structures of the brain and avoid areas that could cause side effects.”

“The system is also the first DBS system in the world to use a Bluetooth iOS platform providing an improved user experience for patients and programming efficiency for physicians. The system also offers improved durability and enhanced comfort for patients,” said Dr. Patrick.

The Abbott Infinity system also offers new, distinct patient advantages such as being the world’s first and only DBS system operating on a Bluetooth® iOS software platform. Clinicians can streamline the programming process to become more efficient in their practice by using the world’s first and only Bluetooth iOS™ software platform on an iPad mini™ mobile digital device. Patients can discreetly manage their symptoms with their Abbott Infinity DBS System iPod touch+ mobile digital device controller.

“We use this technology to make it patient-friendly, because these days the use of smartphones and iPods is almost universal,” said Dr. Lisk. “Essentially, we do everything we can to make it possible for the person to have this disease to feel like they are managing their disease, as opposed to the other way around. These are people, not just a patient – and they’re just using an iPod.”

“Bringing this technology to CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System and to our patients here is truly an amazing step for medicine in Northeast Texas,” said Steven P. Keuer, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System and President of CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic. “Additionally, it represents the very best of what we aim to do every day for our patients: joining compassion and expertise to benefit those who require treatment. It is wonderful example of our vision to be a leader, a partner and an advocate in the creation of innovative health and wellness solutions that improve the lives of individuals and communities so that all may experience God's healing presence and love.”
