Tyler, TX – The CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will celebrate 10 years of serving and saving the children of Northeast Texas with a Superkids celebration on Oct. 6, from 9 – 11 a.m. at The Children’s Park of Tyler.

The celebration will be a time for former patients and their families to gather in celebration of their accomplishments alongside their partners on the NICU team. The event will feature food and games, face painting, balloon animals, entertainers, music and more.

“We are thrilled with the progress and success of the NICU and our patients over the first decade,” said Linda Robert BSN, RNC-NIC, CNML, Clinical Director of the NICU/Pediatrics/Pediatric Specialty Clinics for CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “We are so excited to be able to share this day with these patients, their families and our staff. Working in the NICU is a calling for every member of our team, and this celebration will be a meaningful and inspiring opportunity to live out our mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.”

Tyler’s only Level III NICU opened on November 18, 2008 at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler providing state-of-the-art technology, facilities and skilled staff to serve those born too sick or too soon. Today, this 24-bed Level III NICU offers care for up to 18 sick and premature infants in a state-of-the-art setting, close to home, where they can be supported by family and friends.

The CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler NICU Team is composed of a range of specialized clinicians, nurses and physicians all working together to provide the highest level of care for patients. The NICU Team includes neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, certified lactation consultants, neonatal dieticians, a pediatric pharmacist, a child life specialist, social workers, case management, chaplains and other specialists creating a continuum of care for ill newborns.

“We’re very proud of our NICU Team who have been working hard to make sure our NICU meets the highest standards in the State of Texas and providing compassionate, faith-based care to this region for a decade,” said Jason Proctor, Chief Operating Officer, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler. “This anniversary acknowledges that CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler has been a critical part of so many families’ journeys and marks the beginning of even more wonderful things to come in the future.”

The first 10 years of neonatal care at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System has certainly been a success, and the future looks even brighter, with expansion and growth on the horizon. In March of this year, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System announced the plan to expand the Neonatal Intensive Care and Labor and Delivery Units at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler. To be completed in phases, this project will expand the current capacity of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to 28 licensed private or semi-private (for twins) NICU beds with an expanded well-baby nursery, lactation suite, transitional care facility and other amenities to include a spacious family-friendly waiting area.

“With the expertise of our Medical Director, Dr. Morris, we are expanding the current area to create a state-of-the-art, best-practice facility that will increase our capability to care for those babies born too sick or too soon,” says Chris Glenney, FACHE, CEO of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital has a history of going above and beyond to care for our community’s children. From opening our doors one day early in 1937 to care for students and families affected by the New London School explosion, to today as we announce this project to expand our ability to care for mothers and babies here in Tyler.”

This project will rely heavily on the philanthropic support of the Tyler community. “We are so very fortunate to live in a community where generous donors share our vision and our mission,” says Scott Fossey, Vice President of Group Development for CHRISTUS Heath – Northeast, “and our promise remains the same, to provide opportunities for the community to invest in the exceptional health care provided to the mothers and babies who come through our doors.”

“Our goal has always been to provide care for as many neonates in Tyler as possible,” said Brenda Morris, M.D., NICU Medical Director. “Whether that meant increasing services, adding staff or equipment, or enhancing education, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System has been ready and willing to answer the call to serve.”
