What is massage?
Massage is the rubbing of the soft tissue of the body, such as the muscles. Massage is typically helpful in relieving tension and pain, improving blood flow and encouraging relaxation. Massage therapists usually use their hands to apply pressure but may also utilize their elbows, forearms or feet. There are a variety of massage types and they range from very soft and relaxing to more intense and active.
Why is massage beneficial?
Massage is used to promote relaxation, decrease stress and relieve pain. It may also decrease pressure on nerves and restore normal joint movement. Studies show that it reduces anxiety, improves blood flow and decreases muscle tension. Overall, massage is safe and can provide a number of benefits.
What are the types of massage?
Swedish Massage Therapy: Intended to be very relaxing, this is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States. The therapist uses long smooth strokes, kneading and circular movements on the top layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil.
Hot Stone Massage: This type of massage uses heated smooth stones that are placed on certain points of the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. The therapist may also hold the stones and apply gentle pressure to relieve muscle tension.
Deep Tissue Massage: Deep tissue targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue and the therapist may use slower strokes or friction techniques across the muscle. This type of massage is generally used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain or injury recovery and can leave the client sore for one to two days after the massage.
Prenatal Massage: This pregnancy massage is increasing in popularity among expectant mothers. Massage therapists who are certified in prenatal massage know the proper way to position and support the woman's body during the session. This type of massage is used to decrease stress, swelling, aches and pains. It can also reduce anxiety and depression.
Sports Massage: This type of massage is designed for active people and does not focus on relaxation, but on preventing and treating injuries and improving athletic performance. Combinations of techniques are used and sometimes stretching is facilitated to help loosen muscles and increase flexibility.
* Massage types may vary by the location and therapist.
