FAQs About Hospitalists
What is Hospitalist? Hospitalists can be Internal Medicine or Family Medicine physicians and have training in other medical specialties such as Cardiology and Intensive Care. They assume the primary responsibility of efficiently managing the process of inpatient care for medical and surgical patient’s from the time of hospital admission to the time of their discharge home.
Hospitalists do not replace the patient’s Primary Care physician, surgeon or any other specialist, but in fact work closely with them to provide total case management for the entire period of the patient’s hospital stay.
Will the Hospitalist be my new Primary Care physician? No. Hospitalists do not see patients outside of the hospital setting. While you are under the care of a Hospitalist, your Primary Care physician will receive continuous updates about your condition and they play a major role in your treatment plan during your hospital stay.
After leaving the hospital, should I schedule a follow-up visit with the Hospitalist? No. Once you have been discharged from the hospital, follow-up visits should be made with the Primary Care physician who consulted with the treating Hospitalist in developing your treatment plan during your hospital stay.
I was admitted to the hospital and treated by a Hospitalist and I’m supposed to schedule a follow-up visit with my Primary Care physician, but I don’t have one. What should I do?
