Just over four years ago, in May 2009, a 60-year-old man passed from this life on to the next. His soft-spoken, compassionate spirit has not been forgotten, nor has the legacy he left in honor of the compassionate, capable nurses of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. His desire was to recognize the critical role of nurses who are committed to providing excellent medical care to the patients of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances.
Mike Gower, a resident of Hawkins, Texas, wanted to make a difference. Now, he will impact more people than he might ever have imagined, and he will make a difference in more lives than anyone could have dreamed. With his will, he put into place a $1.7 million gift to set up the James Michael Gower Endowment through the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation. Mike didn’t realize it at the time, but his gift and generosity embodies the very Spirit of Giving that serves at the core and heart of the planned giving program at the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation. His bequest at the time of his passing is the simplest type of planned gift to make and one of the easiest to implement.
There are numerous ways to make a planned gift to the Foundation, and even more ways for that gift to be designated to provide care or improve the lives of patients, including trusts, charitable gift annuities and life insurance policies. If you wish to make a gift of your IRA or 401(k) plan, this can usually be done by filling out a beneficiary designation form provided by your plan administrator. You can create a bequest of any dollar amount, gift specific property or designate a percentage of your estate in your will to a particular program, clinic or project at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Hospital through the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation. As a grateful patient and friend of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation, one can elect at any time to add a provision or letter to an existing will that simply states the donor’s desire to add the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation to his or her will.
These types of bequests allow individuals to leave a lasting legacy of kindness by arranging the method and details of the gift now, but delaying the benefit to a later date. In addition to providing potentially life-saving medical care for current and future generations, these gifts often provide economic benefits to the donor, including a current income tax deduction, an increased income for life, an avoidance of capital gains tax and an improved estate tax situation.
