Are You At Risk?

Take a test to find out.

Take this quiz developed by the American Diabetes Association to see if you are at risk for having diabetes. Your score will help you determine whether you are at high or low risk for diabetes. For each true statement write down the number next to that statement, for each false statement write down zero. When finished add together for your total.

  1. I am a woman who has had a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth. (1 point)
  2. I have a brother or sister with diabetes.  (1 point)
  3. I have a parent with diabetes. (1 point)
  4. My weight is equal to or above that listed in the chart (See Below) (5 points)
  5. I am under 65 years of age and I get little or no exercise. (5 points)
  6. I am between 45 and 64 years of age. (5 points)
  7. I am 65 years old or older. (9 points)

If you scored 10 or more points you are at high risk for having diabetes. Schedule a visit with your doctor soon to find out if you have diabetes.

If you scored 3 to 9 points, you are probably at low risk for having diabetes now. You can keep your risk low by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising 20 to 30 minutes on most days of the week, and by eating balanced meals and snacks that include whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean meats, and fruits and vegetables.
