Am I Morbidly Obese?

Answering this question may give you the courage you need to take the first step. Below are tools you can use to determine if you are morbidly obese and potentially a candidate for weight loss surgery.

There are several medically accepted criteria for defining morbid obesity. You are likely morbidly obese if you are:

  • more than 100 lbs. over your ideal body weight, or
  • have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40, or
  • have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight
  • unable to achieve a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically supervised dieting

The results of the BMI calculations are displayed below. Note that these are approximate values, and are intended to be used only as a rough guide.

PLEASE NOTE: The BMI indicator is just a guide and may provide misleading results. It does not take into account different body frames, muscle tone, etc. It's important to speak with a physician about your individual weight if you are unsure.

For example, if you are 5'4, 145 pounds but you have a small frame/build, you may look out of shape even though the BMI caluclator says your weight is "desirable."

Those same stats (5'4 and 145 pounds) may look completely different on someone with an average or larger frame/build.

So even though these two people have the same weight and height, they carry it completely differently. The BMI calculator does not take this into consideration.

That's why it's important you speak to a physician about your individual weight.
