Sound Physicians to Lead Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics Hospitalist Program

TYLER – Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics have announced that beginning August 20, Sound Physicians has been contracted and formally begun managing the Hospitalist program at Mother Frances Hospital Tyler (MFH Tyler) and the Louis and Peaches Owen Hospital (LPOHH). Sound Physicians will also bring on-site operations leadership and hospitalist RN’s to help drive performance and has plans to build out its post-acute provider network and transitional care management program.

Sound Physicians is a physician-founded and led national management company started in 2001 with headquarters in Houston. They manage over 930 hospitalist physicians in more than 100 hospitals across the country.

“We are incredibly excited about this new partnership and what it will bring to Trinity Mother Frances and our patients,” said Patrick Simonson, interim Director of Hospital-based Services and Practices for Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics. “In addition to these wonderful physicians, TMFHC will be getting a true, reliable set of performance analytics for doctors, practices and patients. We will essentially have access to a national database geared toward individual physicians, which will give us the capabilities to better evaluate ourselves and improve patient experience and outcomes. This is a progressive approach to hospitalist care.”

This agreement is a bellwether for both TMFHC and Sound, as there will be additional hospitalists added to the staff at MFH Tyler and the LPOHH, and Sound at Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics will be the largest employed group of Sound physicians anywhere in the country.

“Trinity Mother Frances is a top-rated organization, with a multitude of awards and recognitions for their high quality care,” said Dr. Steen Trawick, Regional Medical Director for Sound. “We came in with the goal of taking an already excellent program to the next level. We want to be partners working toward constantly improving the level of care available to patients in East Texas, while also continually advancing the skill and capabilities of the physicians through professional education, internal and external resources, and the development of physician leaders.”

Working with Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, Sound Physicians will introduce its SoundConnect™ workflow and communication platform to drive improvements in inpatient care outcomes and communication and collaboration of the team. Sound Physicians will also apply its expertise in building strong physician leaders, revenue cycle management and a track record of physician recruiting success.

Visibly, patients will not see a change in the high levels of care they have come to expect, though there will be innovations enacted. Fully 96 percent of the hospitalists previously employed at MFH Tyler and the LPOHH have remained in place, while two more have been added. Eventually, there will be 41 hospitalists.

“When adding these physicians now and in the future, TMFHC will benefit from Sound’s robust recruitment engine throughout the country,” said Simonson. “Tyler is already ranked as one of the top places to practice medicine in the U.S., and Sound will be able to help bring in distinguished physicians to live and work in our community.”

“This is a response to the evolution of the industry and the progression of hospitals and what our patients needs demand,” said Suhel Patel, MD, Chief Hospitalist. “This agreement constitutes a best practice, and we are delighted to be working with Sound, a physician-run organization focused on quality, efficiency and satisfaction from both a patient and provider perspective.”

Joining Dr. Patel will be Sound Regional Medical Director Dr. Steen Trawick, and Regional Director of Operations Angelica Cotshott. There will also be a temporary onsite Program Manager, Jessica Turner.

“Sound has been successful in delivering quality care at 16 other leading hospitals in Texas and seeing those results was one of the factors in selecting them to manage our hospitalist service at Trinity Mother Frances. We look forward to Sound integrating their high performance model and expertise into our system of care for the benefit of the patients and community,” said John McGreevy, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Mother Frances Hospital Tyler and the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital.

About Hospitalists

Hospitalists are internal medicine physicians or physician assistant who specializes in caring for people in a hospital. They act as advocates, coordinate care and keep all a patient’s care providers informed. Hospitalists have taken on many of the roles of the family doctors of years past, essentially streamlining the hospitalization process for the patient. They offer faster admissions, better communication and a chance to answer many hospital-focused questions with which those outside the system may be unfamiliar. Hospitalists are on had 24/7 and are well acquainted with the hospital, specialists and services where they work. They also assist with a smooth discharge and inform your family physician of the latest health information so they may best resume responsibility for your care.
