A: No. SpineAssist guides your surgeon precisely to the pre-planned anatomical location where intervention is necessary. It does not cut or perform any action on your body. Only your surgeon performs the required incisions for your spine surgery and places implants, if necessary.

Q: How is surgery with SpineAssist more precise?
A: In open surgery, the surgeon needs a direct field-of-view to the operating field, which means creating an incision large enough to be able to reach the spine and expose a full view. In minimally-invasive surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions to allow either “key-hole” visualization of the operating field or through retracting the tissues beneath the skin to expose the spine. To compensate for this limited field-of-view, surgeons use fluoroscopy (X-rays) to image their progress. Yet, even with imaging, comparative studies demonstrate that MIS accuracy is lower than in open surgeries (which offer a better, direct field-of-view). So, there is a clinical trade-off between accuracy and the advantages of MIS (see below). The SpineAssist Surgical Guidance System is highly accurate. It is designed to consistently provide accuracy to 1 mm (1/25 inch), which is superior to human ability. However, the surgeon must always verify that the system’s suggested anatomical site is indeed the desired position prior to taking any action.
