Tyler, TX – The explosive three-game lineup for the seventh-annual Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic is again filled with premier high school football powers, and returns to Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on August 26, 27 and 28.
The three-game Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic opens with Atlanta meeting Gilmer at 7:30 PM on Thursday night. Atlanta, which won a 3A, Div. II state title in 2003 and defeated Gilmer during its playoff march, is coached by John Tyler graduate Ronnie Melton. Gilmer is the defending State Champion in Class 3A, Div. I and is ranked No. 7 in the state’s Class 3A preseason rankings.
Lufkin and John Tyler will collide at 7:30 PM on Friday night and will be meeting for the third straight season. Lufkin, which won a Class 5A crown in 2001, came back from a 21-0 deficit to defeat Tyler Lee in the 2008 Classic, 26-21. Lufkin is ranked No. 16 in Class 5A entering the season.
John Tyler is ranked No. 7 in the state’s Class 4A rankings heading into in its first season in 4A in 31 years. The Lions opened their 2009 season with eight straight wins, including an impressive 27-18 victory over Lufkin in the 2009 Classic. John Tyler is 3-3 in past Classic games.
The finale of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic will pit Euless Trinity against Tyler Lee, at 9 PM on Saturday. The late kickoff is due to national television, with the huge game a key headliner of the eight-game “ESPN RISE High School Football Kickoff” schedule (August 27-28-29; check your local listings).
Trinity is the preseason No. 1 for the second straight season by USA Today and will also start the Class 5A poll atop its peers in Texas. The Trojans have won 5A, Div. I State Championships in 2005, ’07 and ’09, and held off Tyler Lee in the 2007 Classic, 21-10.
Tyler Lee is coming off a share of another District Championship and a trip three rounds in the postseason last fall. The Red Raiders are 3-3 in past Classics, and en route to its 5A, Division I State Championship in 2004, defeated Trinity in the semifinals, 28-7.
